Guide: Bill Splitter Calculator

What is a Bill Splitter Calculator?

A bill splitter calculator divides a restaurant, hotel, or shared expense bill equally among a group, factoring in tip and tax. It removes the awkward mental math at the table and ensures everyone pays their fair share including gratuity.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the total bill amount before tip
  2. Enter the tip percentage (15% is standard, 18–20% for good service)
  3. Enter the sales tax if not already included
  4. Enter the number of people splitting the bill
Formula: Tip Amount = Bill × Tip%. Tax Amount = Bill × Tax%. Total = Bill + Tip + Tax. Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bill Splitter Calculator

Technically, tip is traditionally calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people tip on the total (including tax) — the difference is small (a few cents to dollars). Our calculator tips on the pre-tax amount.
In the US: 15% is the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard for good service, 20–25% for excellent service. For takeout: 10–15% is common. For delivery: 15–20%.
Our calculator splits the bill evenly. For unequal splits, have each person calculate their share separately and use our calculator to verify the group total matches the bill.
Yes — toggle "Round up per person" to round each person's share up to the nearest dollar. The surplus is tracked so you can see the total compared to the bill.
